Impacting /  Zambia, Africa

2009 marked Hope Beyond Borders' third visit to the village of Kaombe in Northern Zambia. This year's team of 12 people spent 2 weeks with the community assisting in a fresh water solution, leading a kid's camp for over 200 children and encouraging the local women's sewing group. Take time to read the exciting things happening in Kaombe Village and beyond!

First Kid's Camp a success
Written by Madison Dunn
kidsWith supplies in hand the team arrived at Kaombe’s Basic School on our second day in the village. When we prepared for the three-day event we were told to expect about 150 children to participate – we had no idea the reality would be over 200! No matter how overwhelming the situation might have been, we found our story telling skills and creativity were still capable of facing the challenge. Each day we spent about two hours rotating the children through three stations of activities: bible stories, craft making and recreation. Each day represented a new and different story with a craft to reinforce the message from the bible. The children donned crowns the day they learned of Esther’s heroism, sported lion’s masks after learning of Daniel’s bravery in the lions den and showed off works of art displaying God’s creation when we explained “in the beginning.”

Making local connections
joyceDuring Hope Beyond Borders' first trip to Zambia we visited the nearest town (approximately 30km from Kaombe Village) where we met an amazing woman named Joyce Ngoma. Joyce runs an NGO (non-government organization) in Mpika, Zambia called Program for Vulnerable Children & Women (PVCW for short). PVCW tirelessly provides assistance that it can to local communities and villages throughout Mpika District. PVCW believes that women can join with the men to access opportunities, direct community response to issues, and help children and all community members have satisfactory lives. Training is provided to communities on a wide variety of topics, including health, hygiene, farming, micro-business start-ups and more!

Nyambe's Story
Written by Katie Fourqurean

Description

My name is Katie Fourqurean. From January 2006-April 2008 I lived in Zambia, Africa, as a health teacher and missionary. My main focus was to teach preventative HIV/AIDS, Child Health/Nutrition, Safe Motherhood education to villagers who did not possess knowledge on these topics, so they could help prevent them through healthy living practices. I lived in a village in Northern Zambia called Kaombe.

About 5 months after moving to my village, I was introduced to a young man who I would learn was only 4 days older than I, named Nyambe Roman Chileshe. From the moment I met him, he had a kind smile, a sincere and warm personality, and a deep unshakable joy about him. He was a person who wanted to help the village, but was not looking for handouts.

Women given opportunity to learn trade
Written by Susan Witmer
sewingWhen sewing classes were offered for women in Kaombe Village during our trip in September of 2008, we didn't know what the response would be. After almost 100 women showed up to take the class we realized how important it was to start a Women's Sewing Group in that community. Since that first class the women have organized themselves into five smaller groups which each meet one day a week in the sewing room at The Mango Tree. Thanks to a generous donation in November of 2008, four sewing machines were purchased and the groups were able to begin their training. Each group has a facilitator who has a professional background in sewing and is paid with a portion of the sales from the items they make.

Zambia 2010

It's that time of year again! Hope Beyond Borders is off to Zambia for the 4th consecutive year to work with the Mango Tree Project in Kaombe Village.

This year's team consists of 8 people, 7 of whom are all returning for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year. We are excited to continue our partnership with the community there with the ongoing Mango Tree Self Help Arts & Education Center that was planted in 2007. We'll continue to work with the staff and volunteers to pursue new areas of development and self-sustainability.

This year 3 team members are staying for a full month with the rest of the team joining for 2 weeks. Time will consist of working in the local school, construction project on a group home, building gardens & chicken coops and training local artisans in craft-making. We'll also spend time connecting with other NGO partners we have developed relationship with over the years and assisting them with any needs they have.

Thank you for your continued support of this project!

TRIP DATES: July 27th - AUGUST 26th.
